Glamping is the hottest travel trend of 2020.
After the global coronavirus pandemic, almost everyone is eager to get out of the house and do something different. But our travels are still far from “normal,” and experts and common sense point to a direction that will likely continue into the coming years: travel by car, separate accommodation without having to come into contact with someone in the elevator or lobby, and time spent outdoors — active or not — are the biggest trends right now.
Glamping meets these trends and hits all their sensitive points. It is a campsite for people accustomed to luxury hotels. The facility is always located in the bosom of nature and almost always in desirable and beautiful natural places. You always have your own private space, resort amenities, lots of activities, and when it comes to food, in most cases you can order it in or cook it yourself - without going to a restaurant.
What is glamping?
The combination of “glamor” and “camping” is certainly not a new concept, but it’s certainly one that’s having a major renaissance. It’s a format that ’s long been used by top-tier safari lodges in Africa, some of which have “tents” that dwarf the presidential suite at the local hotel. They’re usually giant canvas structures parked on permanent platforms with running water and often the kind of bathrooms you’d expect to find in a four- or five-star hotel. They’re basically canvas houses, and most have fine bedding, porches, fire pits, and often rustic accents. Other variations on this paradigm include yurts, circular Mongolian-style tents that are usually very large single rooms; cabins; fully functional small summerhouses; and “oddities” like fancy treehouses.
Some are small glamping-only sites, while others are glamping complexes within larger resorts, but in either case they don’t quite manage to combine the ruggedness with a camping feel that’s accessible and enjoyable for even the most inexperienced outdoorsman. Most are also pet-friendly. Glamping has exploded in recent years and is now found all over the world.
Here’s a look at some interesting glamping developments in the US:
1. Under Canvas, Nationwide: Under Canvas it's sort of the Hilton or Hyatt of the glamping world, the largest chain or brand, and operates seven seasonal locations, all of which are close to important national parks/landmarks. Besides Zion above is Glacier, MT; Mt. Rushmore, SD; Grand Canyon, Arizona; Yellowstone, MT; Great Smoky Mountains, TN; and Moab, UT near Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. All are operated from spring to fall, although the seasons vary, with Tennessee having the longest and Glacier the shortest.
Likewise, while the tents, packages and facilities at the resorts are similar, the number of options and activities varies. For example, Zion has six types of tents, Glacier has seven more models, and the Grand Canyon has five. Glacier and the Great Smoky Mountains offer water options like rafting, kayaking and fly fishing, while the Grand Canyon offers helicopter tours and horseback riding. But other than that, the locations are very similar - apart from the main attractions, the local nature and national parks are very diverse.
Under Canvas announced new locations in Acadia National Park, ME and Joshua Tree, Yosemite and Catalina Island, all in California.
2. Open Sky is brand new (opening in September) and will feature huge, multi-room, African safari-style canvas tents on raised wooden platforms with large terraces, fireplaces, bathrooms with large tubs, outdoor showers, bamboo bedding and even spa tents. Another novelty is the newly opened Wildflower , a “glamping community” with several unique options, including canvas tents, covered Old West-style wagons and bungalows, as well as amenities like outdoor yoga classes.
3. Fireside Resort, Jackson: Unique among glamping sites, Fireside was one of the first properties in the world to embrace the new “tiny home” movement a few years ago. While it’s not really a camping product like a tent, it is the most affordable and private, turnkey, self-contained lodging option in one of the most popular outdoor destinations in the US, the stunning town of Jackson (prices start at just $250 per night). In the summer, Jackson is a gateway to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks (both top ten in the US), and the town itself is also a major attraction, full of Old West charm, unique shops, and great food. In the winter, home to what many experts consider to be the best ski and snowboard resort in America, “The Big One,” Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and Fireside are open year-round.
Nestled on eight tree-lined acres between the town of Jackson and the Teton Village ski area, Fireside is a rustic, elegant cabin resort located just 6 miles from the gates of Grand Teton National Park. The One-Bedroom Cabins are sustainably built, LEED-certified tiny homes manufactured by industry leader and design expert Wheelhaus. Four styles are available, with amenities like free Wi-Fi, kitchenettes, HVAC systems, dining areas, living rooms with flat-screen TVs, sofa beds and gas fireplaces. All provide decks with propane grills and picnic tables, as well as gardens with fire pits. Larger cabins feature sleeping lofts and sleep up to 6 people. Pets are welcome. The resort aptly describes itself as "a hybrid between a campsite, a luxury hotel apartment and a private vacation rental cottage."
